Why I Built Formatly: The Academic Formatting Problem That No Tool Solved

Four years of proofreading academic papers taught me that citation tools and Word templates aren't enough. Here's why I built Formatly — and what surprised me about the launch.

Four Years of Watching Smart People Lose to Margins

I’ve been proofreading and editing academic research papers for over four years. In that time, I’ve seen brilliant research — genuinely important work — brought to its knees by something as mundane as a wrong margin or a misplaced period in a citation.

It happened so often it stopped being surprising. A PhD candidate submits a paper they’ve spent months on. The content is solid. The analysis is sharp. But the formatting is a mess because they ran out of time, or energy, or both. And the professor sends it back with notes about the running head, the reference list indentation, or the table captions.

Not the research. The formatting.

I was freelancing on Fiverr at the time, editing and proofreading academic papers. Clients paid good money just to have their formatting fixed to their institution’s standards. And I saw the same pattern in my own writing too. The problem wasn’t the content — it was the container. And students were paying a premium to get the container right.

I watched colleagues — smart, capable people — spend more time fighting Word and citation managers than actually writing. And the tools that existed to “help” weren’t helping at all.

The Tools Problem

When you look at what’s out there, the landscape is fragmented. You have citation managers that handle references but leave the rest of your document untouched. You have Word templates that break the moment you paste in a different section. You have premium services that charge $50 to $150 per paper but take hours or days to return results.

And then there’s the rise of generic AI. Students paste their papers into ChatGPT and ask it to format in APA. The result looks plausible but is almost always wrong — wrong indentation, wrong capitalization in citations, wrong heading hierarchy. Because large language models don’t know the rules. They predict words. And academic formatting is about precision, not prediction.

I’m a developer by training. I’ve built automation systems and software solutions for years. When I saw the gap between what existed and what researchers actually needed, I couldn’t look away. The problem was technical, not aspirational. It needed rules, not guesswork. And I knew I could build it.

Enter Formatly

The name Formatly came from a simple thought: Grammarly handles your grammar. What if something handled your formatting the same way? Clean, automated, working in the background so you can focus on what actually matters — your research.

Formatly was built on a straightforward premise: upload a messy academic paper, choose your citation style, and get back a fully formatted document in about 30 seconds. With tracked changes so you can see exactly what was modified. With support for APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and Turabian. With cross-style conversion so you can switch from MLA to APA without rebuilding your entire document.

No AI hallucinations. No incomplete formatting. No waiting days for a service to return your paper. Just rules applied consistently, the way a human editor would — but in seconds instead of hours.

What Surprised Me Most

When I talk to other founders, they often describe the struggle of convincing people they need a new product. Investors, early users, beta testers — everyone needs convincing.

That wasn’t my experience with Formatly.

Every person I told about the idea validated it immediately. Not the polite “that sounds nice” kind of validation. The “wait, this exists? I needed this last week” kind. Fellow researchers, academics, students — they all had a story about formatting pain. And they all wanted to know when it would be ready.

On launch day, something even more surprising happened. I didn’t run ads. I didn’t post on every social platform. I just put the product out there. And people signed up. They found it. They used it. The market had been starved of this exact solution, and it responded the moment the solution existed.

That told me something important. This isn’t a product that needs to be sold. It’s a product the market has been waiting for.

Why This Matters

Academic formatting isn’t glamorous. It’s not the part of research anyone enjoys. But it’s a barrier that affects outcomes. A rejected paper, a returned thesis, a docked grade — these all have real consequences for real people. Graduate students on tight deadlines. Researchers submitting to journals with strict style requirements. Undergraduates learning citation rules for the first time.

Formatly exists because I believe the mechanics of formatting should never stand between good research and its audience. The rules exist for a reason — consistency and readability — but applying them shouldn’t be a test of endurance.

We’re just getting started. The current version handles full document formatting across five major citation styles. The interactive AI feedback engine lets you ask questions about formatting rules and get answers inline. Cross-style conversion means you’re never locked into one format.

And unlike services that keep your documents for training models, Formatly is privacy-first. Your research stays yours. No document logging. Zero training data.

Built by Someone Who Lived the Problem

I’m not a product manager who studied the academic formatting market from a distance. I’m someone who spent years editing papers, watching the same formatting issues surface again and again, and decided there had to be a better way.

Formatly is that better way. And if you’ve ever lost an evening to APA margins or MLA headers, I built it for you.

Upload your paper and get back a perfectly formatted document in 30 seconds — free.
